Lou Wegner

Actor, Hero Award Winner & Pet Philanthropy Circle Junior Ambassador

Lou Wegner presenting the Outstanding Junior Award to Brittany and Ariel Lavalle to recognized their contributions to Last Chance Animal Rescue and the Rescue Rangers Program.

At age fourteen, he learned about the high rates of euthanasia in shelters that were overflowing with unwanted pets when he volunteered at a shelter in Los Angeles.  It was astonishing to him and he recognized that he was in a position to create a platform to speak out

and rally our youth across the nation and around the world.  From his inspiration, “Kids Against Animal Cruelty, “KAAC”, was started in 2010.

It has grown from a single voice to over 50,000 members participating in “KAAC” including 15 chapters across the nation that are solely run by teens. Members are active in animal issues including banning pet store puppy mill sales, eliminating the use of gas chambers at shelters, saving wild Mustangs, and preserving America’s western frontier.

The Islip Horsemen's Association's
The Spirit of Long Island
Mounted Drill Team

The Islip Horsemen’s Association Inc. is a non-profit organization sponsoring the continued appreciation and education of horsemanship for both its members and the public. “The Spirit of Long Island” Mounted Drill Team was formed in 1978 by John Jorgensen who was a member of the New York City Mounted Police Unit. John was looking to find a new sport where he could be part of something grander, with a team of riders who enjoyed the company of those who shared his special dream.  The team is now being coached by Loretta Hall and assisted by Francene Lewis who share John’s dream and continue with the team’s tradition of keeping the American spirit alive. The drill team is made up of riders of all disciplines, many of whom have been with the team for over 10 years. Our horses range in age from 9 years to an impressive 28 years old and they include such breeds as quarter horses, thoroughbreds, appaloosa, rocky mountain, hanovarian cross, morgan and a welsh arab cross pony.

These performances not only entertain they are an excellent example of good horsemanship.

Anthony L. Ungaro
Anthony’s Ride for Shelter Pets

and Former US Marine

Harkening back to the days of Route 66 and how Americans used to drive awareness of issues from town to town, “Anthony’s Ride for Shelter Pets” took Rock & Rawhide volunteer, Anthony L. Ungaro, from New York to Los Angeles on his 2007 Harley-Davidson FXDB Dyna Bob.

Anthony is a 29-year-old Brooklyn native who is combining his love for motorcycle riding with his desire to help animals. He served for eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a deployment to Iraq during the 2004 Battle of Fallujah, before returning home and finding love with his red-nosed pit bull Donny. According to Ungaro, “I attribute my successful transition from the military to college, to the positive experiences and responsibilities that come with having a pet in the family.”

Anthony rode his Harley-Davidson cross-country to help spread awareness about Rock & Rawhide and pet adoption. Anthony’s motorcycle trip spanned over 4,000 miles, covering 14 states from New York City to Los Angeles, California from July 30th - Aug. 14th.

He will be stopping at the following Petco stores to meet local animal shelters where he will deliver toys, treats and supplies on behalf of Rock & Rawhide.  He will meet with local press to discuss the importance of supporting the shelters, with some adoptable animals on-hand for their close-up.

Lead sponsors include Petco Foundation, Elvis Duran and the Morning Show and Shoei Premium Helmets.  Supporting sponsors include Natural Balance Pet Foods, KONG Company, 2 Dogs Treats, Benebone, Lauren + Vanessa and more.
